What Does the Cervix Do?
The cervix connects the uterus to the vagina. The cervix's location and function are pretty magical -- it connects the inside of the body to the outside. During menstruation, the donut-shaped cervix opens a teeny bit to allow blood to pass from the uterus to the vagina. During ovulation, the cervix opens slightly, allowing sperm -- if any's around -- through to the uterus. And during childbirth, the cervix opens super-duper wide -- as big as a grapefruit! -- to let a whole baby go from the uterus through the vagina and out into the world. Wow!
