Wake up and smell the colon! We all know coffee βοΈ helps us poop, but we still don't know exactly why. A 1990 study published in gastroenterology journal Gut (yes, our new favorite mag!) showed that coffee produced a "gastrocolonic response" -- aka π© -- in some people. However, we still don't know what exactly in coffee is sending us running for the bathroom π½. Could it be: 1. Caffeine (unclear because decaf can also get your bowels moving) or 2. Gastrin? Coffee stimulates the release of this stomach hormone, which tells you when you're hungry and also gets those bowels going, or 3. Something else? Coffee acts on the stomach lining and small intestine. We don't know for sure, all we do know is, we sure do like our morning coffee and poop! P.S. You'll find that
colon mug at our print-on-demand shop and that cuddly
colon plush here.
