Neurosurgery Outreach Month 

August is Neurosurgery Outreach Month. The month is dedicated to educating the public on the complex neurosurgery field focusing on the brain and spine health. It is also a time to honor the medical teams who treat neurological disorders.

Breast Awareness in August 

    There are two breast related awareness events during August. They both focus on educating the public about breastfeeding, as well as,  honoring those who are or have breastfed. 

    • World Breastfeeding Week (August 1 - 7) 
    • National Breastfeeding Month 

    Children's Eye and Safety Month 

    Children's Eye Health and Safety Month showcases the importance of healthy vision during a child's learning and developmental stages. During this time regular eye exams, early detection of eyeball related issues are brought up, and proper safety habits are reiterated. 

    White Coat Ceremony 

    The White Coat Ceremony was created in 1993 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, the ceremony signals the transition into clinical healthcare. 

    It is a rite of passage for students in the health or medical profession. The ceremony is held in August because that is the beginning of the academic year or clinical training. 

    Gastroparesis Awareness Month

    Gastroparesis is a chronic disorder where the stomach empties food into the small intestine too slowly. The cause of this disorder is because muscle or nerves are working improperly. 

    This annual event is held to educate the public on the disorder, improve early diagnosis and advocate for more research.

    Psoriasis Awareness Month

    August is Psoriasis Awareness month held every year by various organizations. The goal of the event is to educate the public about psoriasis: what it is, what it looks like, the impact it has on the body and what triggers it. 

    The event was also created to fight social stigma and supports those living with this chronic autoimmune disease.

    Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month

    Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a rare genetic disease that affects the central and peripheral nervous systems. It destroys the lower motor neurons in the spinal cord, which leads to progressive muscle weakness. It also impacts breathing, swallowing, crawling and walking. 

    This month is dedicated to educate the public on this genetic disease, as well as, advocate for research, better insurance coverage, care and medical equipment. This event is also held to honor patients, families and caregivers.
