Awesome Organ Tees

Posted: Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Picture 1Oh my my, look, it’s Hello Kidney, from Wrongtees.com! Agggh, it’s the best thing ever! I also spent some time on Threadless yesterday looking at other awesome organ-related shirts, and found this belly shirt by mioke. It’s not only anatomically correct, it also happens to be gorgeous. We like the way she left out the lungs and heart to focus on all the gut-area organs. And we’re not sure who designed this organs-as-hi-fi stereo-system shirt, it’s put out by Hybrid Apparel, but we love it! {Thanks, Russ}

A Renal Winner

Posted: Thursday, September 24th, 2009

12580_23080910553While dialysis has always been more of a necessity than a source of enjoyment, it no longer has to  take up your whole day sitting in a clinic or at home.  The Wearable Artificial Kidney (WAK) is a complete dialysis system attached to a belt.  While style is not a key feature here, mobility definitely is. The WAK allows patients with severe renal failure to enjoy the everyday pleasures of life while receiving dialysis 24/7.  The belt weighs in at a mere 10 pounds including its power source of two 9-volt batteries and claims to be light enough to use while running, walking, or even riding a bike! You can read more about the benefits of the WAK at Gizmag.

Test For Humans

Picture 10Considering the fact that I look at internal organs all day long for a living, my score on the name all the internal organs in four minutes quiz is shamefully bad. I only got 15 out of 24 total organs, isn’t that pathetic? Granted, it was mainly because I didn’t really read the directions and forgot to pluralize things like parathyroids and ovaries (and jeez, who knew the esophagus would be included, but skin wouldn’t? And they rejected spelling gallbladder as one word. I say, look it up in the dictionary, bitches). Anyway, learn from my mistakes, pluralize,  and take the quiz. The clock does start ticking right away, so be ready to go when you click on the link and don’t dawdle like I did.

Guts on the road

Posted: Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Heart and kidney visited the esteemed Mayo Clinic a few days ago, on a special road trip. The I Heart Guts team (that would be my wonderful husband, our 9-month-old baby and me) hit the highway to investigate a rare affliction that’s troubling my man (more on that later), so we had some fun driving through the desert. While we were there, we checked out the gift shop to see if they needed any guts, but I think the answer has got to be no way, stocked as it was with purple boa-clad bears that, when a paw was pressed, sang Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to have Fun.” I won’t tell you about the singing chihuahua. On the bright side, the Mayo Scottsdale has a great medical library for patients, so if you’re in Phoenix, check it out! There’s tons of books, scientific journals, a giant glob of fake fat, a skeleton, and a really nice librarian. We wanted to stop by Red Hot Robot, an awesome vinyl toy shop in Phoenix, but we ran out of time. Pooper.
