About I Heart Guts
I Heart Guts is the brainchild of an anatomically obsessed illustrator who loves internal organs and all they do. Founded in 2005, our bare-bones family operation strives to offer the best in stoopid slogans paired with happy gloppy guts. We like to think of the Guts as what you might find inside a dissected Hello Kitty.
The guts grew from a single drawing of a broken heart, after a string of bad hookups, dead-end relationships and lame-o boyfriends. At the time, I was also doing a lot of drinking and smoking, so a sad liver and bummed-out lung followed. Years later, my wonderful husband wondered, “Why don’t you do something with those darned guts?”
Wendy Bryan, pictured at left, has never been a stranger to making strange things. Known for making fresh bread fetuses and valentine hearts from laminated head cheese, Bryan was always interested in the intersection between gross and cute. She made her first science-inspired plush toy when she was thirteen, when some friends needed a planet puppet to spice up a presentation about Uranus.
Time Out New York said of the guts, “The deliriously happy bunch is sure to put any get-well card to shame,” while Entertainment Weekly ventured: “Who hasn’t dreamed of owning a shirt with a bright, animated uterus on the front?” Black Book magazine says, “These furry toys can transplant love back into any tired relationship” and arbiter of hip Cool Hunting enjoys the “bizarre, giggle-inducing designs.” Wired blog’s Geek Dad notes, “Imagine the fun of saying ‘Go upstairs to bed, sweetie, and don’t forget your pancreas!’” Learn more about your organs here, check out more press here, or read some nice things from our fantastic customers.
I Heart Guts’ world headquarters is in the Washington D.C. metro area.
No Stomach, But Sense of Humor Still Intact
“I purchased two of your plush stomachs to give to my 27 and 29 year old ‘kids’ this Christmas, and I can’t thank you enough for the delight your product brought to all three of us! My kids had their real stomachs surgically removed, every single cell, in 2009 and 2012, to cure them of the hereditary cancer which took their father in early 2009. You helped bring joy back to our family, and I am truly grateful.”
Panky Goes to Med School
“I placed my first order with I Heart Guts and look forward to surprising my doctors with pancreas pins! Thank you a thousand times over. This company is great for those that need joy in darker times. My little pancreas is going to med school with me once I get the real one working!”
“I am a pediatric nephrology transplant coordinator, and one of our younger patients received your gut kidney pillow as a gift. Your products are clever and very adorable. When a child does have a kidney transplant, it is also useful as a unique pillow splint for them to use over their incision area!”
