threadless-antibioticsGotta love this genius T-shirt design on Threadless by Alia Rezk, "My Gut, My Choice." So cute! And I really have always wondered what happens in your intestines if you chase your antibiotics with Pinkberry.
pancreas While listening to Weird Al's "Pancreas" song (a parody of Brian Wilson/The Beach Boys' musical style), I stumbled across this news on diabetics! The actual bacteria in people with Type II diabetes is, apparently, different than the bacteria in people who don't have the disease. There is also news on fecal transplants - the FDA is insisting that these "transplants" be regulated as a drug! If that doesn't make you laugh, I don't know what will.
intestine Perhaps you've heard of a heart transplant, a lung transplant, and even a uterus transplant, but have you ever heard of not just a bowel transplant (WARNING: STOP READING NOW IF YOU'RE EASILY DISGUSTED), but a feces transplant? Yes, it's true, people sometimes transplant poo. I learned this from What's Your Poo Telling You?, a fun-loving and fact-filled book all about bodily excretions. Folks with really bad cases of colitis caused by poor intestinal flora can sometimes benefit from a squirt of someone else's nicely populated bacterial colony. As the book points out, this last-resort treatment may have a bright future "owing to the short list of willing recipients and the potentially endless supply of donors."
