Medical Mistakes

Posted: Wednesday, July 10th, 2013

doctor-fear“Irrational” fears of hospitals and doctors have always existed; sadly, some of those fears are not so far out there. One of the latest medical news stories is about a woman who went to the ER for a drug overdose, but woke up to doctors about to operate on her to remove organs – thinking she was dead. This happened in spite of a few signs of life before the “surgery”. In case you want to know how many preventable medical errors cause death every year in the US, here’s an article with an estimated answer. It really just makes me want to develop an irrational fear of our health care system right here and now. Do you have any fears about doctors, the dentist, or the health care system? Have a happy Wednesday!

Worth it?

kidneyHave you ever thought about selling one of your kidneys on the black market? Please leave a comment below!

You probably remember hearing about the kid who sold one of his kidneys so he could afford an iPad in 2011. Today there’s another kid who just sold his kidney – for less than the going rate! Apparently it suddenly became urgent for him to pay off his video game debt. Seems like he could have come up with ~$3200 in a less drastic way. But then again, teens have a less than matured Pre-frontal cortex in their brain.

Fun Facts:

Iran is the only country where selling one’s own kidney is legal.

O- blood can be donated to anyone!

Organs you can live without: Spleen, Gallbladder, Appendix, Intestines, parts of Liver (it can regrow), and reproductive organs. You could also argue that you can live without eyes, ears, or nose- but it depends how you define Living!

Hooters at the Hospital

3631867609_71474921a0_mSexy nurses and quadruple-deck burgers come together at the Heart Attack Grill, a burger place in Chandler, Arizona, famous for its Double Bypass Burger, waitresses that dress like slutty nurses, lard-fried potatoes, and free meals not for kids, but for people who weigh in at over 350 pounds. Whether you think it’s digusting or hilarious, you gotta admit it’s brilliant marketing.

Organs in the News

picture-2You knew that you can sell your old adirondack chair, get a job, buy some orange juice or find a boyfriend on Craigslist. But did you know you can also find a human kidney? Two sisters’ ailing father was looking at a 2-6 year waiting list for a donor until they looked to Craigslist to connect dear old dad with a kidney donor.  Someone stepped up to the plate and dad got his organ. On the less legal side, another person looking to connect with some cold hard cash tried to sell his own kidney on Craiglist for $75,000. Not so legal.

Kasper The Friendly Kidney

Holly’s got guts — she’s having a kidney transplant on the 17th after a four year long wait for one. Major guts on this girl. At least now she has a plushie kidney, which she’s named Kasper the Kidney. Very Kute. Hopefully all will go well, we are rooting for her over her at Guts HQ. She writes a great blog called Quest for a Kidney, so check it out and send her some love + support in the comments section! And be sure to send her awesome donor friend love and support, too!
