Eating Guts

Posted: Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

organ-placematI tried to make an alphabetical guts placemat for my two-year-old son, hoping to include every organ and gland we have around here. I got stuck after a while, though, once it dawned on me that spleen, sebaceous, stomach, sweat gland and salivary glands were going to make it very difficult to place all those guts. So I just made a placemat of of all the guts, alphabet be damned. I’ll letcha know how much information he actually absorbs as he flings food all over it.

Whose Body Is It?

Posted: Monday, November 2nd, 2009

01_The ThinkerBuying and selling organs is still illegal in this country, but did you know that selling human tissue and bone is 100% legal? I had no idea until I read this story about Philip Guyett, a North Carolina tissue broker who acquired body parts from not-so-reputable funeral homes, then falsified documents about the health of the tissue. Diseased, cancerous and drug-addled body parts were transplanted into patients before this guy was thrown in jail. Tissues are usually acquired from hospitals, but even brokering body parts this way — not just for transplants, but for biomedical research, too –  brings up a thorny ethical issues. If there is value to body parts and tissues that are regularly thrown away, then who owns leftover tissue and body parts? The patient? The hospital? {via the Economist}

Ribcage Valentine

26664617How beautiful is this paper ribcage, fashioned by xlessthan3 over at Etsy? So lovely. I’m still trying to figure out how it works. Photo via the New York Times. {Thanks, Pollyanna!}

Robot Guts

imgCardboard Robot imagines the Terminator’s guts. We think maybe wear this with these Doc Marten Skelly boots. Or maybe that’s overkill.

After Our Own Heart

organsRidiculously cute super-organ art by Hagit Oleg of Tea Party Studio in Israel. I love that the heart looks like a really tough strawberry, and the liver is so very devilish! This was a contract illustration for an article about organ donation in Maariv magazine. There’s also a pretty great drawing of a brain pumping iron in Tea Party’s portfolio.

Gut Whisperer

la139_fWhy, oh why, don’t they make these for adults? I think that fabulous brain headband is set to sweep those lame metallic headbands worn by the likes of Paris Hilton aside in the world of fashion trendmaking. You heard it here first. Thanks to Julie W. for tipping me off to this fabulous gutsy apron by Lakeshore.

Muttering About

Posted: Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

When a museum calls itself “disturbingly informative” you know it’s got to be great. The Mutter Museum, part of the College of Physician’s of Philadelphia, is chock full of bones, preserved guts floating in jars and other creepy stuff from the bodily world. They are perhaps best known for having a replica of Siamese twins Chang & Eng, who had a conjoined liver (hey, if you can’t share your liver with your own brother, who can you share it with?) that is preserved and on display at Mutter. This place is the original Body Worlds. Best of all, this emporium of body parts will soon carry I Heart Guts plushies, stickers and buttons, so if you’re in the Philly area and you just can’t wait, get your guts there.

Cute Bones and Brains

A few fun new bodily discoveries via Doma and Cuddly Rigor Mortis — a body filled with bones and an adorable pink brain that’s been snacked upon by zombies — oohhhhhh nooooo! So cute and colorful and hard to resist!

Gutsy Fashion

I heart seeing stylish guts, and here’s a few from around the web. At left, we’ve got a haute nurse look by Do Estilista from Brazil’s fashion week. If only all health care workers looked this cute. Next up, we’ve got an adorable top from Kidrobot, that imagines one’s insides as a cartoonishly cute ribcage. Love it. Next up, a line drawing of the heart screenprinted onto a pink knit top, from deadworry over at Etsy, the land of good things!
