Former FDA head Dr. David Kessler researched the ways in which certain types of products keep you coming back for more — whether you’re hungry or not, and put his results together in a book called The End of Overeating. “By combining fats, sugar and salt in innumerable ways, food makers have essentially tapped into the brain’s reward system, creating a feedback loop that stimulates our desire to eat and leaves us wanting more and more even when we’re full,” writes Tara Parker-Pope in the New York Times. Basically, the brain is working to convince the stomach to get some food in there, the more sugary and fatty the food, the more relentlessly the brain pushes the yumminess.
