See photos from last year’s event, or visit the Renegade Chicago vendor page to see all the amazing vendors! Come to Division Street in Wicker Park September 10-11th, 11am-7pm, we’ll see your guts then and there.

Our Hearts Are With Japan

Posted: Saturday, March 26th, 2011

Cherry blossoms are a-bloomin’ down in DC, and they are so lovely! Three thousand of these trees were a gift from the city of Tokyo to Washington DC to celebrate the friendship between the United States and Japan. This year the blossoms seem especially beautiful as we think about Japan’s bravery in the face of its current hardship. The cherry blossom festival is especially cool in that it celebrates blooming trees — an event so ephemeral and unpredictable that it could happen any week, any time. If you’re gonna try to go down there, take the metro and walk, traffic is a beast. Check the cherry blossom webcam to take a peek as they peak! And don’t forget that I Heart Guts will be selling happy plush organs at the Sakura Matsuri street festival on April 9. This year, the theme of the festival, put on by the Japan-America Society of Washington, is Stand with Japan.

Put your mind on the rocks with these fabulous Brain Freeze ice cub trays by Fred & Friends. I would have liked to see the product testing on these — how do they get the brain cubes to float lobe side up?

Kawaii Report

Finding cuteness in unexpected places is always a delight. When that cuteness is found on the walls of a Zambian preschool, even better! Hop on over to Tokyo Bunnie and read the story of Brazilian illustrator Zeh Palito who brought his adorably vibrant kawaii-style friends to the Kwacha House Preschool in Zambia, Africa. I was also surprised and delighted to discover these bizarre and  fantastic drawings on the side of a box of Oat Heads oatmeal. Twitter bird Japan-based British designer Simon Oxley took the normally bland package design of bland breakfast cereal and turned it into a wonderland of crazy creatures, happy spoons and aliens blasting off into space. This kind of magical stuff happens when the business folks let designers actually design.Strolling the aisles of Target a month or so ago, I came across this awesomely adorable Bingo game, adorned with happy dinosaurs in love and sweet little frogs in a naive style. The colors and drawings are so great, I’m gonna need to find an excuse to play bingo. I wish I knew who designed this so I could give the artist full credit — anybody know?

Bird Innards

Bird guts from an exhibit at the Los Angeles Natural History Museum.Interestingly enough, those dark red organs behind the heart are the testes! I had to look up the proventriculus, a glandular organ that’s part of the bird’s stomach where food digests before heading off to the gizzard.

imagina01Is your brain stuck in a creative rut? Boost your noodle with some faux neuroenhancing drugs from The Creative Method, a design firm in Australia that made candy for the creatively challenged — Imaginitol. daydreamingHere’s some science I can really get behind: recent studies show that spacing out can be really good for creativity — and for your brain. The Harvard Business Review suggests taking lots of breaks to zone out and not focus to arrive at new ideas and helps prevents burnout. So let your mind wander and daydream a little, it’s good for your neurons and your noodle.
