Salivary Gland in the Sky

As MCA’s parotid gland takes the Beastie Boys catalog to the other side, we are left to wonder about this extremely rare form of cancer that took musician, rapper, father and Buddhist activist Adam Yauch’s life so early. According to the American Cancer Society, only about 2 in 100,000 adults are diagnosed with salivary gland cancer each year. Because it is so rare, not much is known about what causes it or how to treat it, aside from the standard chemo treatment, but is is known to recur, invading the lymph nodes, and sometimes bones and lungs. The parotid gland is the largest salivary glands, which help break down food in preparation for digestion. The cancerous gland was discovered when Yauch felt an unusual lump on his throat. Our hearts go out to his wife, his daughter, and of course the Beastie Boys and their fans.

Good news, gents, looks like your prostate can stop studying because more and more experts think prostate screening is actually useless unless you have a history of cancer in your family. The USA Science & Engineering Festival is gonna be so much fun, you need to come! A sampling of the great panels in store: The Attack of the Monster Molecule, Eat a Bug, Save The World, Bubbleology, Dumbledore’s Transfiguration Class, Yo! Science Raps!, The Science of Jump Roping, and The Versatile Mr. Freeze (presented by Fermi National Accelerator Lab). Plus loads of hands-on booths by the National Robot Festival and DIY Lab, Scientific American, National Institute of Health, and of course I Heart Guts (we’re at booth #2830 in hall B, some squeeze your guts in person!). Free admission, great for kids and adults alike, open Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 10am-4pm at the Washington Convention Center, hope to see you there!
