Esophagus – Down the Hatch!

Esophagus – Down the Hatch!
They say the stomach is the fastest way to a person’s heart, but what’s the best way to get to one’s stomach? Why the esophagus, of course! This muscular tube sends snacks from your mouth to your stomach with a massage-like movement called peristalsis. When the food goes from the stomach to the mouth, that’s reverse peristalsis, a.k.a. vomiting! The esophagus is separated from the stomach by a sphincter muscle, not to be confused with a similarly named gateway on the other end of the digestive system.  If your esophageal sphincter falls asleep on the job, stomach acid may leak into your esophagus:  that’s heartburn. Ouch! Check out our esophageal goodies here. SHOP THIS ORGAN »
