Peep this amazing animation, The Seed, by Johnny Kelly, which follows the interesting path of one small apple seed, including a quick trip through the human digestive system including the maze-like wonders of the intestine. The stop-motion human body made of paper is quite a sight to see — the faceted organs beat as the seed travels through the esophagus and withstands the acidic rigors of the stomach. See the incredible amount of labor that goes into stop-motion animation by watching The Making of The Seed. Fantastic!

If you’ve ever wanted to make vomit, farts and poo outside your own body, Horrible Science had a Disgusting Digestion kit that allows you to recreate the body’s nastiest fluids. Sadly, it seems this gross approach to anatomy didn’t exactly take off as it has been discontinued, but we’re grateful the Horrible Science books by author Nick Arnold, with titles like Bulging Brains and Blood, Bones and Body Bits, still exist!

We’ve reproduced again, this time bringing you a bigger and better whopping womb in the form of our Huge Uterus! The old uterus, which brought us nothing but trouble in the form of our uterus recall, will be marked down to $12 while supplies last (I’ve always wanted to say that). We only have 100 or so of these lifesize $12 uteruses left, so get ‘em on the cheap! In the meantime, enjoy yourself a larger womb!

If you’ve ever felt like following your heart instead of your head, there’s a good reason why — our hearts might be a lot smarter than we give them credit. Listen to this fascinating BBC story about how some cells in the heart may have memory and store emotions. Shortly after she received a heart transplant, one woman suddenly started to feel like February 17th was a very important date. She later discovered that was her donor’s birthday — an important day, indeed. Learn more about why the heart is smart.

We had no idea that Beastie Boys’ member Adam Yauch aka MCA had parotid gland cancer, but we sure are glad to hear the news that his salivary glands are winning the battle against the disease. The cancer had spread to his lymph nodes, a scary progression for any cancer, but is in remission. {Consequence of Sound via Spinner.com}

Ovarian Psychos

How badly do I want to ride with the Ovarian Cycles/Ovarian Psychos crew? Pretty badly, as it turns out. This women’s only bicycle ride in Los Angeles sounds like the place to be for any menstrual cycler. They wheel out first and third Fridays at Corazon Del Pueblo at 2003 East 1st Street. {LA Eastside via LA Weekly}
Breast Month Ever
Posted: Friday, October 8th, 2010
In case you hadn’t noticed pink ribbons pasted on everything from bags of kitty litter to Swiffers, it is indeed Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Thanks to a “sexy” Facebook campaign, this mother of all awareness months is getting even more attention. Anyway, the bottom line: Breast cancer is awful, and is the second most prevalent cancer for women. Get to know your girls and check your boobs monthly.
