Beware the Gutpuppet

Posted: Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Some gorgeous-looking guts appeared in my mailbox the other day via artist Molly Mac Fedyk, whose latest visual art project is centered around bodyparts, organs and so-called Gutpuppets, guts that move and gush to the artist’s bidding. Very cool innards, in paintings, video and mised media, so take a look!

Full of Heart

Posted: Monday, October 20th, 2008

Photographer Max Gerber — he shoots for TIME, Newsweek, LA Weekly, and more — finished up a project very near and dear to his heart earlier this year — a book of photographs and interviews that documents kids with congenital heart defects. The best thing about the book, called “My Heart vs. The Real World,” is that it includes gorgeous portraits of kids doing regular kid stuff. Gerber documents their lives as they live them — meaning they are not necessarily defined entirely by their heart troubles. Yes, they have pacemakers and doctor’s visits and hospital stays, but they are also just regular kids, and Max snaps their portraits as he does in his professional work — with great sensitivity and a fabulous eye for detail and composition. You can check out some of the snaps on Max’s blog.

Dia de los Plush!

Posted: Monday, October 13th, 2008

The Frankenfoods team took a trip to Phoenix, Arizona, to be part of the plush circus known as Dia de los Plush, a creepy-themed show at the Red Hot Robot store and gallery. Take the time to flip through all the artwork, which includes an x-ray sock monkey and skull bunnies by Spooky Daddy, a personal fave. Someone actually bought Night of the Living Bread, our little slice of zombie toast, so now the set is no longer complete, boo hoo! Hopefully some of the others — Frankensteak, especially — will find loving, happy homes by Halloween — or Dia de los Muertos.

Win Free Glands — Gland Giveaway!

Posted: Thursday, October 9th, 2008

I’ve been hankering to make a gutsy or glandy magnet set, but these being lean times and all, well, that idea will likely fall into the “make those later” basket. Wouldn’t it be cute to slap a mammary gland on a note to buy more milk? Or perhaps the salivary glands need something mouth-watering? What would the adrenal glands care for — more coffee? I got some magnet sheets and crafted a few handmade gland magnet sets — and you can have one when you win our gland contest! Leave your reply in the comments section below with your name, email (we will not use it for any other purpose other than to contact you and it will not be made public) and the correct answer to this question: “What’s the major difference between endocrine glands and exocrine glands?” Two winners will be chosen at random. Good luck!

Making Hospitals Better

Posted: Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Just got my greasy mitts on Graphics Alive, a design book filled with wonderful art and illustrations from the world of graphics, fashion and art. Within its pages, a fabulous quote from Simone Legno, the illustrator for Tokidoki: “Hospital rooms, especially the branches where kids are, should be decorated with cute characters, positive colors, everything would give them a smile or strength to spend in a better way thier hard moments.” He’s right! It got us thinking about how cool it would be to decorate children’s hospital rooms with artwork from peeps like Tokidoki, Friends With You, Tado, and yes, our guts, a la the Volkswagen/Hotel Fox project in Copenhagen, where each room is transformed into a happy world. Anyway, if anyone wants a hospital room splattered with I Heart Guts, we wanna do it! Drop us a line…

Kasper The Friendly Kidney

Posted: Monday, October 6th, 2008

Holly’s got guts — she’s having a kidney transplant on the 17th after a four year long wait for one. Major guts on this girl. At least now she has a plushie kidney, which she’s named Kasper the Kidney. Very Kute. Hopefully all will go well, we are rooting for her over her at Guts HQ. She writes a great blog called Quest for a Kidney, so check it out and send her some love + support in the comments section! And be sure to send her awesome donor friend love and support, too!

I See Right Through You

Anyone out there remember Slim Goodbody? The guy in the organ-coated unitard? He told us 80s kids all about the wonders of our bodies while chatting with robots (seriously, what 80s show was without a robot friend?) wearing an organ-coated unitard and a nice little fro-perm. I’ll admit, something about a man dressed in a flesh-and-guts unitard always kinda gave me the creeps, but Slim was definitely a memorable character — I think he was on Captain Kangaroo. Believe it or not, Slim is still taking his message of health and fitness to classrooms all over the country (now without the perm). Their color and learn tee is pretty fresh, check out the snap of Goodbody with a gang of kids all wearing their own hand-colored guts tees.
